Geneva CC vs Zurich Lions CC, 40-over friendly match, Bout-du-Monde, 9 April 2018
Geneva Cricket Club 238 all out in 34.4 overs (Idrees 62, Ankit 39, Sara 3-13) beat Zurich Lions Cricket Club 150 all out in 30.3 overs (Sumant 64, Kashif 3-13) by 88 runs
Geneva CC emerged victorious from the first match of the season against Zurich Lions CC. The host won the toss and decided to bat under changing – but rather favourable – weather conditions. Idrees opened the batting with the skipper Anser, who started the season with a cracking cover drive for four, only to be bowled out four balls later by a cracking inswinger from left-hander Sonu. Ankit and Idrees then built up a crucial partnership of 122 runs, only to be bothered by Sonu who again broke the momentum by taking both wickets in his second spell (16th and 18th over). Idrees scored nonetheless the first half-century of the season with great touch and finesse. Viki stepped in and grinded his way through for 28 runs whilst witnessing his comrades falling to the spin bowling of captain Sara and medium pace of Khadeesh. Only Leo (18) and Afif (19 not out) managed to support decently Viki in his endeavour. Geneva were all out for 238 and could have managed to get a much larger score if it was not for some reckless batting by some of its players.
Zurich Lions had a pretty rough start in the second innings and lost 5 wickets for 25 runs in less than 10 overs. Opening bowlers Ankit and Afif bowled on fast pace, very tight lines and short lengths to wack the top and middle order in style. Afif looked so dangerous that every ball delivered promised to be concluded by a dismissal! Kashif swept the rest with his indipping, inswinging unstoppable balls and was supported by Darius – who took a wicket off his first ball of the season – and Ali with his super extra bounce. The Lions were at 65 for 8 in 17 overs, but they fought back with patience and resilience. Sumant, who came in at no 7, made the best out of the not-so-new ball and started building a precious partnership of 75 runs with Sonu. He ended up with the best score of the match with 64 runs, but was finally taken out by Ankit with a swift short ball. Ali then single-handedly wiped out the tail and brought the match to an end. Note the great start of the season of Idrees who not only scored 62 runs for the team, but showed his effective wicketkeeping skills with an astounding number of 8 catches!
Zurich Lions played bravely despite the initial setback and scored a total of 150 runs. We would like to thank them for coming all the way to Geneva to play with us and to show a great spirit in the true tradition of the game.
Geneva CC commences the season with a good, but far from perfect victory. All in all, a very useful exercise in view of preparing this weekend’s tournament against the finest of Geneva’s cricket team.
